December 1-2, 2002
In the afternoon we steam back out into Baie Morbihan where some members of our group are given special permission by the French to visit Ile du Cimitiere (Cemetery Island), where 19th Century elephant sealers were buried. The following morning we visit the site of Captain Cook's first visit to Kerguelen, at the northern end of the islands in 1776. | ||
One of the islands in Baie Morbihan (not Cemetery Island). |

The Naiad with the Cemetery Island visitors prepares to pull away from Shokalskiy. |
||
Off they go for a visit that all reported as "very moving." |
||
In the early dawn light at Baie de l'Oiseau (Bird Bay, known to Captain Cook as Christmas Harbour), the stumps of the collapsed Arch of Kerguelen stand dark and somber as waves tumble at their feet and flurries of snow dance on the wind. |
